A woman's response to recent A&F headline!

She comments that A&F sells XL And XXL for men but not for women which sends a strong message about "fat women". Take a look and see what she says.

Abercrombie & Fitch under fire again!!!

Are you popular, hot, and sexy? If not, the CEO of Abercrombie & Fitch does not want you wearing their clothes! A&F appears to be popular among young adults in Korea but did you know that A&F is under fire again by the very thing the CEO says?

For starters, you have never seen a fat person wear A&F clothes because they don't make XL or XLL clothes! Why? Because the CEO does not want any fat people wearing his clothes so they simply don't sell them. Also, A&F has been known to sell sex to teens and young adults by exhibiting provacative models who are barely clothed in their advertisements.  Judge for yourselves!

As consumers, we have the choice to buy and promote companies that best represent our values. Will you continue to advertise for A&F for free by wearing their logo on your T-shirt?  Just a thought to chew on.

2nd Writing Assignment!

For those of you getting a head start on writing your second paper, you may choose to write about any topic of your choice! I would like to learn what kinds of issues are most important among Korean university students.  Just remember to use the five-paragraph essay style format as the first writing assignment with a clearly stated thesis-the focus of your paper.  Remember, your thesis statement should drive your paper!

Remember to capitalize after a period.  Use a spell check.  And please type your names.

Good luck!

An interesting read about college and university admissions crtieria in the U.S.

Should race (or ethnicity) be a factor in deciding the admissions criteria? What do you think?

Please do not send me "쪽지" from e-class!

Hi guys and gals!

I hope everything's going well! It's week 7! I just wanted to ask you not to send me a "쪽지" from e-class because I do not check the website everyday. Part of the reason is because everything is written in Korean and I have a hard time navigating through the site since I don't understand it.

If you need to send me a message, please sent it to: sashadaisy123@yahoo.com as I check this e-mail several times a day!

Good luck in your studies!

Favorite proverb quotes from students!!!

1. 웃는얼굴에 침 못뱉는다.  "You can't spit on the smiling face" is what one student wrote!  I like this a lot!  Thanks a bunch for sharing!

2. "'To do is to be.' because  it reminds me that I have to do some actions to be myself or human for better world."

3.  "'No pain no gain' - This is my favorite proverb.  When I went to America, I had no idea about English.  However, I put this proverb on my desk and tried my best.  I got "A" on my English class so without pain, we can't get any reward."

4. "'Many cook spoils cooking' - this proverb is my first learning proverb.  This proverb give us that too many opinions can't become perfect result."  Or you can hear it this way as well. "too many cooks in the kitchen" which means the same thing!

Very nicely done guys!!!

Helping others in need...in Honduras

In Unit 2, we will be discussing helping others and I thought it would be perfect to talk about a young lady that I have the pleasure of knowing.  Her name is Bori Byun, a Korean American who attends Emory University and plans on going to Honduras this year with her school's dental professionals.  She plans to graduate soon and apply to dental school there to be a dentist.  She posted that she's in need of $1450 for her trip.

Check out her website!  What do you guys think?  If you feel the urge to help, you can donate to her on-line.

Monday evening class....

Today, one student will be chosen at random to teach the class so everyone should come to class prepared to teach.  Participation points will be given for this this activity. Good luck!

The truth about lying according the www.psychologytoday.com

Interesting read which is related to Unit 2 about "Character counts".

One study finds that at "31 senior citizen centers in Los Angeles recently revealed that only about half of elderly Korean Americans believe that patients diagnosed with life-threatening metastatic cancer should be told the truth about their condition. In contrast, nearly 90 percent of Americans of European or African descent felt that the terminally ill should be told".  I experienced this firsthand in Korea.

And college students lie to their mothers in one out of two conversations.  Is this true in Korea? What do y'all think? Let's share!

The pot calling the kettle black!

In Unit 2, we discussed several proverbs and I coudln't quite get the phrase about the black kettle right but here it is.  It's similar to this: People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

Only for those of you without an Activebook homework CD

If you don't have your homework CD (Activebook CD), as an alternative, you may choose to do ALL the questions from the Workbook instead of writing a summary or borrowing an Activebok CD from a friend. I've uploaded the workbook on this blog so if you'd prefer to do that, that's an option open to you all.

Veggie dog topped with kimchi...

Photo: Kim chee veggie dog...you know you want this!
I've heard of kimchi pizza but kimchi hot dogs? It's not even a real hot dog but a veggie dog! Does it look delish? I'd like to hear some feedback on this!

Attention: Global Business Administration Majors ONLY!

If your major is 글로벌경영학과() (Global Business Administration), I have some good news for you!  You are exempt from taking the Mock TOEIC exams.  Your grade will be calculated accordingly.

Saturday, March 16, 2013

For those of you without the Activebook homework CD!

There are some of you with old textbooks without the Activebook CD. You can either borrow a CD from a friend to do the homework or you can choose to watch the unit videos at the www.gachon.ac.kr website to write a 100-word (half a page) summary about the video. If you should choose to write a summary, your homework will be graded and not checked for completion like the Activebook CD homework. Also, if there are any students with the Activebook CD but wishes to write a summary instead, feel free to do so. This way, it’s fair for all the students!
**Remember to send your homework via e-class!!!

First Writing Assignment

Is lying a part of your everyday life?  If so, how?  When do you often find yourself lying? How do you feel afterwards? Is lying socially acceptable in your society? Why do you/don’t think so?  Have you ever told a lie to avoid hurting someone else’s feelings or to not get punished?  Are “white lies” acceptable among friends?  These are some of the questions to help you get started on your paper.

Please write a 200-word (one page) paper using the five-paragraph essay style format, consisting of an introduction, body, and a conclusion paragraph about lying.  Form a position and develop a thesis, a focus of your paper. Then support it with three major supports in detail.

We will discuss this further in detail during class!  No sweat!

Participation Scores

Remember guys, if you show your pearly whites and participate in class, please come and see me before you leave for the day and I'll give you a check mark after your name.  This is the only fair way for me to keep track of who all spoke in class so please don't forget!
